A Journey from Ghana to Your Home: The Story Behind Our Handwoven Baskets

A Journey from Ghana to Your Home: The Story Behind Our Handwoven Baskets

At Ansah Co., every handwoven basket we offer carries a story of family, tradition, and connection. Our journey began during the pandemic, when Acheampong and Marina, separated by oceans and a visa process, looked for a way to stay close while building a future together. With limited job options in Accra, we saw an opportunity to turn their hopes into something tangible. Alongside me—Marina’s sister, Rhyanna—we set out to create something meaningful. We wanted to connect the artistry of Bolgatanga with homes in North America, while staying connected as a family.

What started as a way to stay connected quickly grew into something bigger. Each basket is made with care by artisans in Bolgatanga, a region with a deep tradition of weaving. These baskets bring warmth and purpose to your home, with each piece crafted by hand.

Meet Danny: Our Point of Contact in Bolgatanga

Danny is our main contact in Bolga, making sure every basket starts its journey to Canada smoothly. He primarily handles logistics—coordinating shipments from the weaving communities to Accra, where they’re prepped for the long journey across the ocean. But Danny is also a skilled weaver, bringing his own experience and understanding of the craft to his role. With a young child at home, he’s a busy guy, but he always finds time to keep things running smoothly for Ansah Co. His role is essential to our team, helping us bridge the distance between Ghana and North America so each basket arrives ready to find a place in your home.

Why Ethical Craftsmanship Matters

At Ansah Co., we’re proud to work alongside artisans in Bolgatanga, supporting the skill and heritage that each basket represents. By working directly with the weavers and partners like Danny, we’re able to create a connection between the makers in Ghana and customers in North America. This relationship is built on mutual respect and a shared love for the craft.

When you choose an Ansah Co. handwoven basket, you’re supporting a tradition that’s been part of Ghanaian culture for generations. Your purchase helps ensure that these artisans earn a fair wage and that weaving communities can continue to thrive. While we began with handmade products from Ghana, we are proud to expand our collection to feature the work of Black artisans and makers from different regions across Africa and beyond, celebrating a rich heritage of craftsmanship and supporting communities worldwide. We’re grateful to be part of this journey with you, sharing a piece of Bolgatanga’s artistry and tradition with every basket that finds its way into your home.

As a thank-you for being part of this journey with us, we’re excited to share a little surprise: use the code BASKETBANANZA30 at checkout for 30% off your next basket! It’s our way of celebrating the artistry of Bolgatanga and helping you bring a piece of this rich tradition into your home.
